Everything Sad is Untrue
As a former middle school librarian and a member of our Board’s review committee and a lifelong book lover.... I’ve read a lot of books. I’ve also developed an instinct for which books will be well received by my middle school (Gr 7 and 8) students. So it is with a lot of confidence that I say that my intermediate female readers will love this story. It has a little bit of everything; tragedy, angst, romance, mystery... I WILL not ruin it for you by revealing any important details. Suffice it to say this is an awesome story of a girl who collapses one day during a track practice and awakens to the news that her heart is failing and she requires a transplant. Treat yourself and read it or buy it for your avid teen reader. My thanks to Candlewick Press for an ARC of this book.
Full disclosure - I love kids as spies stories. I’ve read NERDS, the Gallagher Girls series, the Alex Rider series, Evil Genius, Spy School and Spy Camp. Given my predilection for these tales, it’s not surprising that I was very excited to read City Spies. This was a fast fun read that I think will be enjoyed by younger middle grade students. Five very talented 12-15 year old kids have been recruited to work for MI6. Their base location is the FARM (The foundation for atmospheric research and monitoring) which is a cover for where they learn a variety of spy skills including self-defence, code breaking, counter intelligence, espionage and other spy skills. This first book provides the background for where the kids came from and how they came to be acquainted with Mother, the man who recruited them and now supervises them in their activities. The other are adults associated with them is Alexandra Montgomery who is a cryptologist more commonly known as Monty. I am definitely looking forward to more books involving the City Spies.
Sal Singh is a boy who committed suicide after allegedly murdering his girlfriend Andie Bell and hiding her body. Five years later Pippa Fitz-Amobi has decided to clear the name of Sal Singh for a school project by re-examining all of the evidence she can find and by re-interviewing everyone who was involved in the cold case. Pippa is convinced that the kind sweet boy she knew as Sal could never have done what he was accused of doing.
Middle School former Teacher Librarian - then MYP math and science. Update... VERY recently retired! Still adjusting that I'm not just on summer vacation!!!
Just didn't enjoy it as much as Shadow and Bone. I just felt like the author was really trying a bit too hard to draw this story out. I was able to put it down several times and I couldn't put Shadow and Bone down so there's the differen...
The Grisha triology is a fantasy series that I really enjoyed. I reread the last book because I thought I wasn't remembering something. I'm a bit confused because I've started King of Scars and Nikolai isn't as I remembered. Don't want...

I’m not usually someone who enjoys a story that is predominantly about the attraction between two people BUT I did like this one. The setting is one year after 9/11 and 16 year old Shirin, an American born Muslim whose family moves freq...
I love a good mystery, and although I correctly guessed the murderer in the first chapter, I still thoroughly enjoyed the twists and turns.
